NORCO, La.(AP) — The Latest on a railroad trestle fire west of New Orleans (all times local):
A train trestle fire west of New Orleans has been extinguished.
St.Charles Parish spokesman Tristin Babin says a few hot spots are still being monitored, but are expected to be clear by Sunday morning. Firefighters Saturday used helicopters and airboats to douse the blaze in a swampy area west of New Orleans.
Canadian National Railway spokesman Patrick Waldron says Amtrak’s City of New Orleans and freight service can’t run pending repairs.Waldron said rail workers were on the bridge across the Bonnet Carre (BON-ee KAYR-ee) Spillway on Saturday morning when the blaze began. The cause is undetermined.
Amtrak truncated the southbound run of its City of New Orleans train in Jackson, Mississippi.Christina Leeds, a spokeswoman pills for pain relief the rail service, says passengers were bused south from there. Passengers for Saturday evening’s northbound departure toward Chicago are also being bused to Jackson.
Leeds says Amtrak is making arrangements for trains running Sunday and later.
